Smart Otaniemi

DESCRIPTION

Smart Otaniemi is an innovation ecosystem that connects experts, organizations, technologies and pilot projects. The target of Smart Otaniemi initiative is to plan and implement a new type of smart energy piloting area and ecosystem. Pilots from different domains (smart energy, buildings, transport, communication) will be combined in the area which enables finding synergies and maximizing benefits from cross-cutting value chains. Smart Otaniemi serves as a showroom and pilot platform for new smart energy solutions. In addition it serves both experimental research activities as well as close-to-market proofing of concepts and products. It aims to be a living lab with real customers involved. Focus will be especially on utilizing all types of data for new applications and services and on making Otaniemi more real-time monitorable and controllable area.

AREAS OF SPECIAL COMPETENCE

Our focus areas are local flexibility, smart mobility, building level intelligence, platforms, connectivity and enabling technologies. The key competences and capabilities are within digitalisation and sector integration.

WHAT CAN BE TESTED

Testing different solutions for flexibility in built environment. End-to-end piloting possibilities. Utilising data and new technologies like AI and 5G in energy use cases. Prototyping new services with the users. Co-creation with the researchers, students and startups. Hybrid energy system infra (e.g. geothermal energy, solar, storages, fuel cells).

AVAILABLE INFRASTRUCTURE

Testbeds consist of local distribution network, district heating networks, buildings, EV charging infra, data platforms, 5G test network. VTT research laboratories (e.g. IntelligentEnergy testbed). Real users are involved in the testbed.

PRICING MODEL

Way of working in Smart Otaniemi is project-based at the moment. All work will take place in projects which can be jointly funded or direct projects between the actors. Joining the Smart Otaniemi community is free of charge.
