Joint Call 2021 Accelerating the Heating and Cooling Transition

Announcement of call for proposals

The Joint Programming Platform Smart Energy Systems (JPP SES), in cooperation with the GEOTHERMICA ERA-Net network, have launched a joint call for proposals for transnational projects on 31 May 2021. Consortia are invited to submit their project concepts by 4 October 2021 (17:00 CEST).

A Joint Call of two networks

This Joint Call 2021 seeks to accelerate the heating and cooling transition by bringing together national and regional programmes aimed at energy system integration and technological progress in the various heating and/or cooling technologies, with a strong presence but not limited to geothermal energy technologies. Both GEOTHERMICA & JPP SES networks have been organising Joint Calls in previous years and decided to join the know-how of seventeen energy research and innovation national funding agencies from fifteen countries involved in activities of ERA-Net GEOTHERMICA & JPP Smart Energy Systems to commit to the joint innovation initiative in coming years.

Thematic focus of the Joint Call

The GEOTHERMICA and JPP SES Joint Call "Accelerating the heating and cooling transition" targets projects with a significant impact on the heating and/or cooling transition. The Joint Call is a two-stage process asking in stage 1 for pre-proposals and stage 2 for full project proposals with a budget allocated at approximately €32,5 million.

The concept of the Joint Call combines integration issues and technology development illustrated in the model of thematic concepts below.

A significant proportion of the projects resulting from this call are expected to focus on district heating and/or cooling systems, which does not preclude projects with different scopes and projects on industrial heating and cooling innovation. The projects should address one or more of the abovementioned elements of the heating and/or cooling chain. A significant proportion of the projects is also expected to focus on local and regional sources. Again, this does not preclude projects with different scopes.

Participating funding organisations clarify the national and regional funding possibilities in detail in the published Call Text and Guidelines for Applicants- Annex 1. A national and regional focus on specific issues is subtle and creates opportunities for complementarity and joint progress.

The overall purpose of the Accelerating Heating and Cooling Transition is to resolve challenges facing communities to improve demand for heating and cooling and its integration in the overall energy system by taking innovative ideas and transforming them into reality. Joint Call Team encourage you to discover more details on the scope and call objectives directly in the published Call Text and Guidelines for Applicants document- to download below.

Virtual matchmaking

On our joint virtual matchmaking portal b2match you can find and get in touch with potential project partners for the JPP SES & GEOTHERMICA Joint Call 2021.

You can share your cooperation interests on the b2match market place with other members of the  community as well as with GEOTHERMICA and JPP SES partners, including Associated Partners, qualified Digital Platform Providers as well as Living Labs and Testbeds. This allows you to start building consortia and to co-create project ideas with need owners and potential partners.

The portal for virtual matchmaking is open from 31 May 2021 until 04 October 2021.

All call related information will be released on this webpage, it will be updated in the course of the call processes.
