2nd Working Group Meetings 2018: Diving Deeper into Regional Systems

On September 19, the second ERA-Net SES Working Group (WG) Meeting of 2018 was held in Magdeburg, Germany. This time, discussions evolved around the new focus initiative’s topic regional energy systems. A highlight was the initialisation of the new ERA-Net SES WG Regional Matters.

At the Fraunhofer IFF in Magdeburg, projects and external experts gathered to discuss the specifics of regional energy systems. We were pleased to welcome ERA-Net SES Associated Partner (ASP) Berlin Partner and ASP candidate Energy Systems Catapult.

We would like to thank all of the participants for their contributions, sharing insights to this significant topic and extending the knowledge community.

Morning Session | Approaching Regional Energy Systems from Different Perspectives

Integrated, regional energy systems provide manifold opportunities for achieving European development targets. Our new focus initiative regional energy systems seeks to contribute to the technologies and knowledge prerequisite for their implementation.

As integrated and local energy systems pose specific challenges and opportunities, the existing ERA-Net SES Working Groups expand their topics of discussion accordingly. During the meetings of the WGs, specific questions have been discussed thoroughly, generating multi-faceted answers.

Afternoon Session | Initialisation of the New WG Regional Matters

At the prior ERA-Net SES Working Group Meeting in Malmö in May 2018, experts agreed that relevant questions to be discussed within the area of integrated, local energy systems escae the scope of the existing working groups. Accordingly, a new working group focusing on these immanently regional issues has been initialised.

In this initialising session, experts discussed the questions to be addressed by this working group. Among others, practitioner Anders Hollinder of the city of Uppsala contributed the perspective and experience of the city which was awarded as the winner of the One Planet City Challenge by WWF recently for their ambitious and well-executed climate action, including innovating the energy system.
